8 Questions to Ask Before Saying Yes

Most profiles tell you the facts that are easy to state: height, education, city, profession. They rarely tell you the things that actually determine whether two people build a good life together. Before you say yes to moving forward — meeting the family, getting more serious — these are worth asking directly, even if it feels early.
1. What does a normal weekday look like for you? Not the aspirational version — the actual one. This tells you more about compatibility than almost anything else on a profile.
2. How involved do you want your parents to be in decisions after marriage — not just the wedding, but ongoing ones, like where you live or how you spend?
3. If one of us gets a great opportunity in another city, what happens? This is worth discussing before it's a real decision, not after.
4. How do you handle disagreements? Not "do you fight" — everyone does — but what actually happens in the twenty minutes after.
5. What's your relationship with money — saving, spending, debt, and who tracks what? This one gets skipped constantly and causes more strain than almost anything else.
6. Do you want children, and on roughly what timeline? "Eventually" means different things to different people.
7. What does support look like to you when the other person is having a hard week? Some people want space, some want to talk it through, some want you to just handle dinner without asking.
8. What would make you walk away from this, even if everything else looked good on paper? This is the hardest one to ask and often the most revealing to answer.
You don't need to fire these off in one conversation like an interview — that's its own kind of red flag. But if you find yourself getting to a decision point without honest answers to most of these, that's worth noticing before you say yes, not after.
